The skin has three layers: epidermis, dermis, and the subcutaneous layer. The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. It has two layers of dead cells and two layers of living cells. The dead cells contain a tough protein called keratin, which gives a tough and waterproof nature to the outer surface of the skin. The living cells are supplied with blood from the dermis and contain a special cells known as melanocytes. Melanocytes produce a pigment called melanin that protects the skin from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. The second layer, or the dermis, contains blood vessels that nourish the epidermis and remove the waste products. The fat and fibers in the dermis provides strength and flexibility to skin. The subcutaneous layer is the innermost layer. It stores fat that provides energy to the human body. The layer of fat helps to retain body heat and protects the body from injuries.
